NaCl Lab 9/20/11

1)  Post an image of your unit cell model on your blog.

2)  a.)Determine and post the mass of one cube of NaCl. b) Calculate and post the number of moles of NaCl in one cube. c)Calculate and post the number of NaCl molecules in one cube of salt.
 a) Molar mass (molecular weight) of one unit cell of  NaCl =  233.77 g/mole

Work:
    Mass Cl       = 35.4527
 + Mass Na      = 22.9898
NaCl Molecule   58.443 grams/mole  * 4 = 233.77 grams/mole  in a NaCl Unit Cell

b)  # of moles of NaCl in one unit cell 1.459238452 E^ -22 grams

Work:
        233.77 grams         =1.459238452 E -22 grams
6.02 x 10^23 atoms

c)  # of molecules in one unit cell of salt =  4

3) a) Determine the dimension of one cube of salt.  b) Based on the dimensions determined by the unit cell model, determine and post the number of NaCl in one cube of salt.

a)  one cube of salt = .7mm

b) 5.49153314 E 16nm NaCl in one salt cube.

Here is our work:
[.543 nm in a unit cell,  1,000,000nm=1m,  543,000 nm in a 1mm cube of salt.  Our cube of salt is .77mm.  Therefore, .543nm * .7mm = 380,100 nm. We now have to cube it (^3)  to get the volume... 380,100^3= 5.49153314 E 16nm in one salt cube]
